The solenoid is the linear motor that pushes and pulls the locking mechanism. It's part and parcel of the door latch and, yes, you'll have to take off the door card to get to it. Because all the locks work together there's no reason why the driver's lock would be more likely to have problems than any of the others.

You can hear the motors working in the C-max too, there's are fail safe in the C-max that means once the EPB is on if it fails, it won't come off, unless you pull release handle (which is a one time only thing), but if it fails when its not on, your left with no handbreak.

My local garage has done the following: 1) Checked for visual leaks, found none. 2) Left the car with them overnight for them to cold test.
